CHURCHYARD TOUR - (2)

Nearby is the impressive memorial to Josiah Atwool (c), and his brother David. These were Father and Uncle respectively to Rev.Dr.Henry Courtenay Atwool (d.1922), curate at St.Mary's in 1871, and, from 1879 to 1893, first vicar of All Souls, Harlesden. Josiah made a large donation to the building of that fine church, in which are impressive stained glass windows to his memory.

Close to the North porch is the resting place of George Furness, (d) 1820-1900, owner of Roundwood House which he bought in 1856. He was the first chairman of the Willesden Board in 1875, and, for many years, churchwarden at St.Mary's. Furness built many local houses, eg those in Wrottesley Road, and constructed a large part of the Thames embankment. For the local building he owned his own brickworks at Mount Pleasant, Willesden Green. He eventually became internationally famous as a civil engineering contactor, being involved in many major projects abroad.

George's son, George J Furness, who was MP for Willesden West from 1922 to 23, rests on the other side of the path near the boundary wall. He occupied the family home at Roundwood House until 1935, where he died aged 67.
